Tourists may know of Weeki Wachee Springs as being the home of mermaids. It’s apparently an attraction that draws a high number of visitors. I can pretty much guarantee you, though, I will not be one of them. Seeing humans dressed in mermaid costumes, swimming in a pool, will never be on my Memory List.
For me, the draw of Weeki Wachee Springs is its crystal clear water and lazy-river current. That’s what I was thinking of when I added this memory to my list. I’ve been kayaking there before, and I really enjoyed it. I wanted to experience that again.

Even after going this time around, I still crave going again. With the pandemic, it seems that outdoor activities like kayaking, canoeing, boating, are much more popular than normal. The spring-fed river was so packed with people, it was impossible to experience any connection to nature.
With it being the rainy season, the water wasn’t as clear as I remember it being. It was murky and greenish. The highlight, though, was hanging out with a mama manatee and her young calf, just as my friends and I were getting ready to return our kayaks.

At the end of the day, I wanted the memory of having kayaked in Weeki Wachee. I have that. I just may want to add to it before 2020 is done.
